The directional buttons and the , ,  and buttons are used to control your character. (Please note that all of the following commands assume that the character is facing right.)





The main character movement commands are as follows.




A right kick is performed with the button, a left kick with the button, a right punch with the button, and a left punch with the button. (Steve Fox, however, performs special actions when the kick button is pressed.)



There are three types of attacks: High Attacks, Mid Attacks and Low Attacks. Which type will be performed depends on what combination of the directional buttons and the , ,  and buttons is used. Study your opponent carefully and use different categories of attacks depending on the situation.



These attacks will hit standing opponents, but will miss crouching opponents. They will not damage opponents in a standing guard stance.




These attacks will hit both standing and crouching opponents. You can also hit opponents floating in the air. They will not damage opponents in a standing guard stance.




These attacks will hit both standing and crouching opponents. They will not damage opponents in a crouching guard stance, and can be evaded by jumping.




By entering certain commands, you can make your character perform special attacks, such as Unblockable Attacks, or Tackles. Additionally, when you land an attack under certain circumstances, you can deal more damage than usual.





Throws are usually performed on standing opponents, and can deal greater damage than normal attacks if successful.




When a character is slammed into a wall by an opponent's attack, they may stagger,
opening them up to additional attacks.
Be careful not to let yourself get cornered
against a wall.



When an opponent attacks, you can try guarding instead of counterattacking. Most characters perform primarily high attacks and mid attacks, so a standing guard stance is usually effective. The crouching guard stance is sometimes better against some characters' fighting styles or strategies.



Defends against high attacks and mid attacks, but is vulnerable to low attacks and throws.




Defends against low attacks and evades high attacks and most throws. However, it is vulnerable to mid attacks.




Enter these commands as soon as you are knocked down to quickly
recover, stand up, or immediately perform other actions.
In order to avoid suffering additional attacks, make it a habit
to think about which direction it would be safest to recover toward.




Enter the commands below in response to the opponent's attacks in order to escape from a throw, perform a counter hit while evading the opponent's initial attack, or parry an attack, leaving the opponent vulnerable for additional attacks.




Try to land additional attacks when your opponent is knocked down,
and avoid suffering additional attacks when you are knocked down.



When your opponent is down and isn't recovering, try to land additional attacks.




When you are knocked down, try to get up quickly to avoid
additional attacks from your opponent. And remember that
you can make a counterattack while getting up, too.
